The History of Midway Medical Center

“The founding principles of Midway Clinic were to provide the most skillful and compassionate medical care to all the people of Western North Carolina. As a part of that origin, I am proud that these founding principles stand today as they did 55 years ago.”

~ Ernest H. Stines, MD

In 1957 Drs. William Kearse, Hugh Matthews, Charles Duckett, and George Presley began to discuss building a medical clinic with the idea of sharing call and overhead expenses. Drs. Ernest Stines and Edward Camp later joined the team.

Dr. Kearse had a history with the military and Pentagon and plans were made to build the clinic with concentric squares as the original Clyde office stands today. The clinic was completed in 1959 and holds a unique place as being one of the first with a shared call and expense concept in the country. Originally there were two doctors on call on a rotating basis. The clinic was open seven days a week.

In 1999 Midway Medical Center expanded to a second location in downtown Canton. The Canton office relocated to the old Dixon’s Little Boy in 2000 and is still located there today. Over the intervening decades, Midway Medical Center has provided medical care and support to generations of Haywood County residents.

Presently, Midway Medical Center Family Medicine has locations in both Clyde and Canton. We are a family medicine practice providing “skillful and compassionate medical care” for our community. In keeping with the founding principles, we continue to offer an on-call physician and extended office hours, including evening and weekend hours. Our mission is to provide your entire family with quality health care in a friendly, safe, and caring environment.
